The Magic of Sun in the Garden

The Magic of Sun on the GardenWe had almost 28 days of rain in a row in April and May, but for the past three, the sun has been bold and bright, and the garden is grateful.  Almost everything has sprung forth in the warmth.

Here’s what we’re harvesting right now

  • strawberries
  • radishes
  • lettuce green
  • garlic scapes
  • cilantro
  • lemon balm
  • and gorgeous peony blooms.

And soon, we’ll be adding:

  • sugar and shell peas
  • fennel
  • and more fresh herbs.

The bush beans have unfurled this week, and the corn is on target to be more than knee-high by the 4th of July. Our cucumbers, yellow squash, and zucchini are spreading out, and I saw the first fronds of watermelon and cantaloupe yesterday.

Tomorrow, I”ll be out there with a hoe to beat back the ground ivy and keep the weeds in submission. . . I can’t wait.

All our produce and our fresh eggs are in the farmstand at the end of the lane as they become available. Do stop by if you’re in the area, and visit our Little Free Library in the farmstand while you’re here.

A GWF Animal Primer, Just in Time for our First Wedding

Our New Farm Sign
We got a new sign for the farm. Keep an eye out for it when you visit.

On Saturday, we’ll be hosting our first wedding here on the farm, and it’s a special one – my dad, Woody, is getting hitched to his beautiful bride, Adrienne.  We couldn’t be more happy for them, and if they give permission, we’ll be sure to share some photos from their special day.

We know some of you will be coming to the farm for the first time this weekend, so we wanted to give you a little primer to the critters here, just in case you are as big on names as we are.

Singer-Songwriter John Tracy in Concert THIS SATURDAY

John Tracy In Concert in MadisonCome on out to the farm, enjoy a break in the rain (we pray), and enjoy the music of Charlottesville singer-songwriter John Tracy.

The show begins at 7pm, but come early and sit down for a potluck dinner with friends at 5.

Children are welcome, and we’ll have the bonfire and the s’mores ready.

Suggested donation is $10, and we have plenty of room for everyone in the barn.

Help Us Spiff Up the Farm for Andi’s Dad’s Wedding

Help Us Decorate the Farm for Andi's Dad's Wedding
We’re doing a funky, beautiful display of color at the edge of the barn with old pots (check out the two thunder jugs on top of the oil barrel), and we’d love to add lots more color here.

We’re busily working away to get ready for May 21st, when Andi’s dad, Woody, will be joined with his beautiful fiancee’ Adrienne.  We are honored that they want to have their ceremony here on the farm, and to boot, they are even helping us finish up the barn.  These two folks are amazing.

They have chosen yellows and oranges as their ceremony colors, and we have gotten salmon impatiens and yellow calibrochoa, orange celosia and some red geraniums.  Pink-orange gerbera daisies at the front, and we’re using marigolds with abandon.

But we wonder if you might have orange, yellow, orange flowers to recommend we add to the farm for the ceremony.  Any you’d suggest?

Celebrating Chickens

It’s finally warm enough that I’m able to work in my office again, and with that joy comes another – the sounds of chickens all day long.  They are the perfect background music for me – with their luxurious clucking as they lay and the song of the rooster.  Sometimes, they disconcert my clients when I’m on calls, but mostly, they layer my day with delight.

So today, enjoy some of my joy with a few images of our birds this morning.
